- Have 2 Philips CM121 players which we want to hook up to an XT clone using
- Phoenix Biosis Rom. We are using DIALOG's bibliographic database ONDISC
- program and have also purchased Microsoft.ext from Meridian but have not been
- able to get the system to recognize that there are two CDROM players. Can
- anyone advise?

- Steve, unfortunately you're right about the prospective purchaser. An
- oorganization known as the OPA (Optical Publishing Association) is currently
- being developed which among its stated purposes it to act as a body to
- dissimenate accurate information re: cdrom and the various optical medias.
- Hopefully in the future such a body can help alleviate a lot of the confusion
- among prospective purchasers as to exactly the true state of affairs.

- Ron,
-
- There is no such animal, as far as I know, as a CM121. The CM100 was the
- tabletop model with the high speed serial interface; the CM110 was the SCSI
- version of the tabletop. The new half-heights are CM200 and CM210,
- respectively.
-
- Not knowing which you have, or which controller cards (SCSI, CM153, or CM155
- controllers), it's hard to second guess what the problem might be. You could
- always try to get some technical help by calling Laser Magnetic Storage (the
- Philips and Control Data joint venture that now markets the Philips CDROM
- drives). Ask for Randy Hines. 1-800-777-LMSI.

- There are two things to set for a second drive: the drive address (on the
- drive), and N=X with you configure Microsoft extensions.
-
- Can you talk to the first drive? What do you have the drive address set at (D,
- L, ?)

- Hi... I'm Steve Blanchard, an independent consultant working with CD-ROM
- developers. I just learned about the Forum from a buddy and I am happy to see
- this type of communication starting up. A few comments -- some observations,
- some hopefully to generate discussions.
-
- Was it me or was the CD-ROM Expo last month in Chicago somewhat quiet? There
- seemed to be a respectful number of people there, but no new product
- announcements. Have we peaked in the first cycle for products? Where were some
- of the companies that you would expect to be at a show like this. 3M was a no
- show, IBM was a no show. Why weren't they there?
-
- Most of the search engine companies persist in claiming the high upfront fees
- they demand are justified by the large amount of R&D that went into the
- software. Other than Crowninshield at $5,000 I haven't heard of anyone biting
- the bullet and selling search software at affordable levels. Who's willing to
- test the market for volume rather than price skimming?
-
- Last, but not least -- Bureau of Electronic Publishing is selling Hitachi 1503
- drives for $599.00. A much more reasonable price than the typically quy quoted
- $700-$1,000. Anyone know of lower priced drives available from a anyone else?
-
- The opportunity that CD-ROM presents is fantastic. Let's hope that we don't
- die a slow death waiting for the powers that be to recognize the volume
- opportunity awaiting them.
-
- Talk at you later......

- Thanks for the comments on the problem I'm having in getting my CD-ROM

- Hi Kenneth,
-
- Thanks for the comment on my DOS 4.0 problems. I've since talked to
- Microsoft and they say that it's a CD-ROM extensions problem. I guess I'll
- just have to wait a few more months. No big problem. At times I think 4.0 is

- Apparently a standard is being developed for Interactive Videodisc Training
- Equipment for the DOD by a committee of the Interactive Videodisc Industry
- Association (IVIA). There seems to be some controversy about it among those who
- have learned about what is happening.
-
- I learned of this from a message that was recently posted to the Internet

- using mail, so I have uploaded it to Library 1 with the filename IVIA.STD.
- Hopefully one of the SysOps will make it available soon.

- Sorry for the missing file. I uploaded it on Oct. 4 and I have not logged

- The gist of the bulletin is that LC is now selling CD-ROM with the LC

- standard authority reference for librarians. It should be ever so much more
- useful on CD-ROM.

- Microsoft Extensions V2.0 is available from Discovery Systems for $25.00 plus

- Microsoft Bookshelf has as a prerequisite Extensions V1.01 or greater. I am

- NASTYGRAM On October 4, I uploaded a file to the CDROM Forum. I
- contained a copy of a bulletin announcing CD-ROM products from the Library of

- Please answer my questions at your earliest convenience. I do not dispute
